The best example for this is Android, the operating system which started with Android 1.1 which just allowed us to make certain application process interface changes & some layout changes has now evolved a lot to include novel features like near field communication support, tethering etc. It has greatly matured over the ages. Now almost all the handset manufacturers have started using Android as their operating system because of its open process outsourcing & being fully customizable. So it is the exigency of the present time that you should be aware of the basic functionalities of Android. One of the basic functionality which Android provides you with is Android Package files or APK. Android being a newbie in the market, it still lacks a really strong & organized software structure. So for some complex situations it poses a nightmare to the Android users like installing third party applications. So keeping this in view I don’t want you to get entangled in these complexities. Here we can discuss how you can install the Android Package files or APK so that the third party applications never pose a nightmare to you. Here I will tell you about two methods of installing APK files. In the first method I will tell you how to directly install it from Android market & in the second method how to install it from Android SDK program.

Installing APK files from Android Market

You just have to follow four simple steps to directly install APK files from Android market.
Step1
First of all you have to copy the APK file to your Android’s memory card and then you have to install this memory card into your phone.

Step 2
Now download and set up the Apps Installer app from the Android Market.
Once you have set up the Apps Installer. It will display you the APK files you have installed on the memory card.

Step3
Now you have to just click & install the APK. Now you can enjoy the third party applications to the fullest.
Installing APK files from Android SDK
Now you have to follow just 4 simple steps to install APK files from Android SDK program.
Step1
First of all download and set up the Google Android SDK program & the Android USB drivers. The download links are as given below:

http://code.google.com/android/intro/installing.html

http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip

Step2
Now you have to change your Android settings by selecting “Application settings” under “settings” & then enable “Unknown sources”.
Step3
One more thing you have to do is selecting “SD Card” & “Phone storage” & select “Disable Use for USB Storage
Step4

Now you have to start command prompt & type: adb install <x>/<y>.apk where <x> represents the path to your APK file & <y> represents the name of your APK file. Thus you have successfully completed your APK installing.

Transferring Audio Files from your computer to your Android Handset

Playing high quality music is one of the greatest benefits of any Android device. Moreover, it is also compatible with most of the audio formats which makes your music experience even dearer. But the point of disappointment is that still some Android users are not aware of transferring their music from their laptops or PC’s to their handsets. The most obvious reason for this ignorance is Android doesn’t provide us with a direct sync between your computer & your handset like there is iTunes program in Apple iphone which provides you with a direct sync. But one thing that you should understand is transferring music from Android handset to any computer is not at all difficult. You just have to follow some simple steps for this. First of all, let us try to understand which all audio formats are compatible with Android. Android is compatible with the following formats MP3, AMR, WMD, MIDI, WAV, OGG Vorbis, and M4A. One point worth mentioning here is that M4A is used by iTunes, so because of digital rights management it is always advisable to convert this format before transferring. Now, that you have understood the formats which are compatible with Android let us move on to the steps of transferring mp3 & audio tracks from laptop or PC to your handsets.
Step 1
First of all you have to connect your Android powered handset to your computer, you can use a USB cable for this purpose or make a Bluetooth connection.

Step 2
Next, you have to scroll the menu bar down as you see the USB icon on the bar. You will receive a message saying “USB connected”.

Step 3
On receiving the message, tap on it. You will see a dialog box coming up asking you “Mount” or “Don’t Mount”. Click the “Mount” option. This is to transfer files from your computer to your mobiles SD card.

Step 4
Now, open your USB drive from your computer which will result in opening of a dialog box asking you the purpose of the new hardware for which you have to click “Open folder to view files”. If it doesn’t come up what you have to do is you have to just click the start menu, my computer option & double click on “Removable disk”.

Step 5
After opening the folder to view files on the new hardware, you will find a folder named “Music”, if it is not there, then create one.

Step 6
Now, that you have found (or made) “Music” folder, again click the start menu, My computer option & then open whatever file contains your music. Now, drag all the music files you want in your handset to your folder “Music” on the “Removable Disk”.

Step 7
Now, once you have done with your transferring, click on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon on the bottom right side of the taskbar.

Step 8
When you are done with this too click on the “USB Mass Storage” option & click on “Stop” button.

Step 9
Now, in your phone once again scroll your menu bar down & you would be shown a message saying “Turn off USB storage”. Click it & confirm it. Now you can safely remove the USB port without damaging the files, computer or your handset.

Thus, you have successfully transferred your music files. Enjoy the music you have transferred in your Android handset.

Managing Widgets on your Android Homescreen

If you were not living under the rocks for a while, then you may be knowing that Widgets in Android devices are small web apps which are mainly used to recover & display some information from internet. They can be used to show certain favorite web pages so that you can directly browse the page by clicking its widget. Moreover with the release of Honeycomb version of Android, Widgets have got a whole new outlook altogether. Now with Widgets like Gmail Widget & Youtube Widget in Honeycomb’s homescreen, you can actually peruse the inbox & flip through the videos like cards respectively. So it’s the prime necessity of the hour that you should have the basic knowledge of adding Widgets on your Android device’s homescreen. Infact it is quite simple, you have to just follow the steps given below & you can easily add any widget to your homescreen.

Step 1
At first you have to be at the home screen. If you are not at the home screen just press the home key, wherever you are, pressing the key would take you to the home screen.

Step 2
Now you have to make sure that there is enough space in the homescreen for your new Widget.

Step 3
Now you have enough space in the homescreen, choose an empty space & tap the home screen till the menu appears or you can press the menu button & click the “ADD” button which now you can see on the screen.

Step 4
As you have clicked the “ADD” button, you can see a pop up menu appearing on the screen tagged as “Add To Homescreen”. Now you have to tap the menu item tagged as “Widgets”.

Step 5
Now that you have taped the menu item tagged as “Widgets”, you would be shown the list of widgets you can add on to your home screen, select the widget you want on your homescreen.

Step 6
Now you have to click those selected Widgets, so that you would be getting them added on your home screen.

Step 7
Now that you have added your Widget, press the home key. Now you would see your selected widget on the home screen.

Step 8
Now to relocate it to your desired position just tap the widget scroll your finger downward & take the widget to the position you want it to be.

It was simple isn’t it? But there can be times that you would no longer need any widget or you want space for a new widget. In that case you have to delete any existing widget. Now to delete an existing widget just follow the simple steps given below.

Step1
Just tap the Widget you want to remove & scroll your finger downwards. You can well see the thrash can icon on the slider.

Step 2
Scroll the Widget to the thrash can so that both turn red.

Step 3
Now you can remove your finger. You have thus successfully deleted you widget.
This was easier than adding. But one great advantage is that even if you delete it from home screen you can always avail it from the list of Widgets. So try to create as much widgets & enjoy the Android experience to the fullest!!!
